On October 20th 2014, the world lost one of its greatest designers at the age of 82. Oscar De La Renta, born in Santo Domingo, became internationally renowned in the early 1960’s His collections have oozed with a sense of glamour, sophistication, and femininity that he has carried through the longevity of his career.
He didn’t simply knock down doors in the fashion world, he obliterated them. In 1993, he became the first Domincan to ever design for a French Couture house during his stint at Balmain. Throughout his career he never faltered from his mission “My job as a designer is to make a woman feel her very best” and that was exactly what he did. So much more than simply a creator of clothes, he was the creator of a piece of art that accompanied women through a specific windows of time. He created moments that became immortal in our psyche.
He stood next to so many of us brides as our grooms saw us for the first time. Clad in lace and pearls of his design, he gently held our hands and whispered that we were gorgeous and sent us on our way to our forever. He captured a magic within the wedding gown itself, a magic that few could ever capture and only fewer could even hope to replicate. In 2013 Oscar de la Renta told Vogue during a fitting with Kate Bosworth for her 2013 wedding to Michael Polish “In the same manner that she fell in love with that man, I hope she’s going to fall in love with that dress,” . For his last project, a custom wedding gown for Amal Alamuddin’s wedding to George Clooney, Oscar De La Renta made the world fall in love with him all over again in the same manner we had done so many times in the past, with passion and excitement for the moments that would be created with him by our side.
It is with a full heart that I compiled a few of my favorite Oscar De La Renta pieces. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
